Video: She & Him/(500) Days of Summer

This is a great video made by Marc Webb, the director of (500) Days of Summer, and features Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It was premiered in USA Today today.

The song is Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? by She & Him (the brainchild project of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel). You should really pick up the album if you haven’t yet.

Nobody Dances Anymore

From the summer after I interned at the militia group. This song came up in iTunes yesterday and jogged my memory. Glad I remembered it too. What a great album.

Favourite HD Channel

My favourite HD channel is, by far, Palladia.

This 1080i music channel is pretty phenomenal. In last two weeks of getting acquainted with our HD programming, I’ve seen footage from countless UK music festivals and Coachella 2006, Oasis in concert, music videos and tonight, All-American Rejects live in concert. All in glorious high definition. I’ve got Weezer live in Japan set to record to the DVR next.

Imagine my surprise to find out Palladia is an MTV channel! An MTV channel that only plays music?? Amazing. They’ve definitely done something right with this channel. It’s fantastic and my favourite.

Damion Suomi Day

The fantastic P is for Panda has released the equally (possibly moreso) fantastic Damion Suomi record today. Jess and I got the album from @chadpearson last year and listened to it all winter long. It is SO good. Go buy the cheap download–and if you’re up for it, the CD or LP. Great music from a great musician and from a label that’s set on helping those less fortunate than ourselves. For a taste of the tunes, check out the live video below.

Defining 2008 Musically

Once again, I absolutely love last.fm. I’ve decided to look at what albums I listened to the most this past year and–I know the year isn’t officially finished, but it’s close enough–to post the top ten. I suppose in a way this is defining my 2008 in album terms.

It’s an interesting look over all, actually. So here is a portion of my charts. To see the entire thing click here. Discuss what this means amongst yourself. Or in the comments.

1. The Good, The Bad & The Queen – The Good, The Bad & The Queen
2. Norah Jones – Not Too Late
3. Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend
4. Oasis – Stop The Clocks
5. Bloc Party – A Weekend In the City
6. The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
7. Arctic Monkeys – Favourite Worst Nightmare
8. Ryan Adams – Gold
9. The Wallflowers – Bringing Down the Horse
10. The Killers – Sam’s Town

Instant Recall

Wow. It’s been sort of a crazy week. Elections, hype, work, noveling and lots and lots of nostalgia.

I’m a person who attaches memories to songs. I always have. Today I discovered someone’s music collection through Mojo (an iTunes network sharing program). He had so much music that I lost when my hard drive crashed at the beginning of this year and I’ve spent the day filling in those gaps. I’ve got from around 9200 tracks back up to 12,000. That’s still nowhere near the 29,000 I had at the height of my music collection.

I’ve also been using the release candidate of Songbird today and it’s been surprisingly great. I can scrobble from the player (built-in) and control loved tracks. Plus it loads the last.fm album info into the sidebar including the recommended artists – but not only that it lists the tracks I have by those artists. Songbird has a built in browser and music blog searcher for downloading music. And it’s pretty fast. A lot faster than the development releases I’ve been trying out for so long.

A Dashboard Confessional song came on in the middle of the day and took me all the way back to my sophomore year of college, sitting in front of my Windows desktop… it was actually a little bit emotional. Sometimes I forget how strongly my memories come on when I hear certain songs or artists and it surprises me.

But then, that’s what I’ve always loved about music. It’s like another sense. Smells and tastes do similar things. Moods also get attached to songs for me. In any case, it’s been nostalgic.
