afMicro Project

Pretty close to being done. I think I’ll end up putting it live on Wednesday of next week, when we start going out to the fairgrounds to hammer fence posts and do preliminary festival setup.

[sneak peak]

I tried to make it look more Twitter-y, I guess. That wasn’t really intentional, but it’s the direction it took. I’m using a plugin called Fresh From FriendFeed and Twitter which is a ridiculously long name. The author doesn’t give enough options in the backend, so I had to modify some of the PHP for this one project. It’s a little sad. I wish I could’ve just left it, but it was so convoluted.

Basically, the plugin monitors your twitter feed and imports your latest tweet and creates a post out of it. Cool right? Well, the instructions in the backend are a little hard to understand. I’m all for making language in your posts/docs sound cool, relaxed and comfortable (see how I write on agapefest.com), but not when you lose clarity of meaning. I’d like the settings to say things like: “Import each Tweet as a post. (We’ll refresh to keep you current.)” and “Import your tweets once a week/day/month” instead of the craziness he has in the backend.

One of the cool things about the plugin is that it automagically parses media from Twitpic and YouTube (and others) and creates the embed code while inserting it into your new post. Well, it would be cool if the images were given any classes whatsoever. Or if the layout had any classes whatsoever. Really. No classes. Metadata is there for the alt attributes… but not one class. So custom styling is a no-go without poking around in the plugin code and adding your own for each item. Annoying.

Also, every post title begins with “Fresh From {Service Name}” and you can’t change it in the graphical config. Once again, you have to poke around in the plugin code. Oh, and on top of that, by default it adds a filter to redirect all of your meta links (including permalink in headers) to the service URI. That means “leave a comment” takes you out to Twitter to leave a reply. And there’s not option to turn it off. It’s a cool idea, and definitely useful in some cases. But a on/off option would be killer.

So, I’ve had a few annoyances, but had no other recourse short of learning PHP to a degree where I could write my own plugin. Not conceivable for me at the moment, though it’s on my list. That, or the time will come when Twitter is ubiquitous and I won’t have to deal with so many visitors not having an account.

Apart from all the headaches, I’m pretty excited about this little experiment next week. Hopefully the plugin will refresh quick enough to keep things going (documentation doesn’t exist. No FAQ. Just a FriendFeed room that you, again, have to search through to find what you need — if it’s there at all). Otherwise I really may have to write my own plugin. Maybe I will for next year anyway.

New Web Projects

Well, not entirely new. This week I’ll be working on converting AgapeFest.com into a quick micro-blog for festival week.

What does that mean? It means I’ve got all of my staff that have iPhones, picture messaging or Flip cameras set to take photos and post them to Twitter/Twitpic. Then AgapeFest.com will pull each of those in and create a post about them. If I had been thinking, I could’ve used this as an opportunity to learn how and then write my own WordPress plugin for it. Maybe later.

In any case, I think this is going to be super fun. By the way, does anyone know of a Twitpic-like service that does video instead? Like if I had my Flip out there, little 30 sec to 1-minute videos would be awesome. I’d better buy some batteries…

Favourite HD Channel

My favourite HD channel is, by far, Palladia.

This 1080i music channel is pretty phenomenal. In last two weeks of getting acquainted with our HD programming, I’ve seen footage from countless UK music festivals and Coachella 2006, Oasis in concert, music videos and tonight, All-American Rejects live in concert. All in glorious high definition. I’ve got Weezer live in Japan set to record to the DVR next.

Imagine my surprise to find out Palladia is an MTV channel! An MTV channel that only plays music?? Amazing. They’ve definitely done something right with this channel. It’s fantastic and my favourite.

New Prez at Greenville College

That’s right, I have a new big, big-boss. As of this afternoon Greenville College has named a new President, beginning 01 July 2009.

Tonight I’ll be heading over to a reception for Dr Linamen and taking some photographs as well as giving him an AgapeFest welcome package (with a couple of All-Access passes).

Fun times ahead, and another weekend of working. Maybe some photos to follow.

It’s Springtime Again

We’re kind of feeling it here. The erratic weather–sunshine and warm to rain and chilly–and plenty green popping up. The flowers are looking nice and the air smells sweet–AND it’s light jacket weather, which I like. And since we’re staying here another year, Jess and I are going to start gardening soon. It should be a good summer.

Another Feature Done: Portfolio

I finally got around to updating the Portfolio page here. It’s taken a long time, some frustration, and some good friends with keen eyes to get it looking good. But it’s there and I’m happy with it.

It uses a lot of the built-in WordPress gallery functionality. Since I store my photography over and Flickr and not here, I feel good about making the gallery function as the Portfolio. It works *pretty* well, but not perfectly. I say not perfectly because the next/previous image navigation isn’t super-helpful. I can’t have it automatically add a text link as well (as far as I can tell anyway), so that gets added in manually.

When I started doing this last night I had problems, and this morning it came down to the Shadowbox plugin breaking things. I replaced it with the venerable Lightbox 2 (which actually fits the bill better aesthetically) and everything is peachy.

Though it’s currently limited to web design, I’ll be adding some other media projects I’ve done in the near future. Since I focus on web projects, it just made sense to get those up.

Anyway, head over, take a look at stuff and tell me what you think!

Trek Makes Me Happy

My dad made me a Star Trek fan at a very early age. I’m not sure I’d call myself a devoted Trekkie, but I love the show – especially The Next Generation, but mostly because that was what I grew up with on tv.

That said, I am SO excited for the new J.J. Abrams -directed film. One of my favourite writer/directors taking over the Trek mantle is awesome. Particularly because the writers on his team that handled the new script are die-hard fans of the franchise even if Abrams himself is not.

Yesterday Gizmodo posted the submissions to there latest photoshop contest which was all about ruining the new Star Trek film. I found it pretty hilarious and it provided me a good five minutes of laughing at my desk. A lot of the submissions were, unsurprisingly, smash-ups of Star Trek and Star Wars. And were really funny.

So along those lines, here’s a YouTube video @kevinkirchner found… and it’s funny.

#LOST LiveChat Tonight

Yes friends. A group of us on good ol Twitter livechat during LOST every week. Tonight’s episode is rumoured be Miles-centric (which I’m excited about) and should be FAN-tastic.

We’re loving the show this season. It’s been so great. So many questions answered, so much action… just. Awesome.

So, this is a formal invitation, If you live in and Eastern or Central timezone (or equivalent–we had someone in Venezuela join us last week, and we have a chatter from the Great White North every once in a while), come chat with us a few minutes before show start.

I’ll tweet out a link tonight, so if you’re not following me on Twitter, you’d better start!

Hope to see you there tonight! It’s gonna be awesome.

Goings-On

I’ve heard a lot of great feedback from people (even if they’re NOT commenting here) on the new design. Yay! I still like it one full day later, so I guess that’s saying something. And my blog hits jumped from 5 the day before I released it to 175 after the announcement. Not too shabby!

So, other things in life. I have decided to apply to The New School for the Spring. They have a MA in Media Studies available for online study; and though I would miss the on-campus aspects of networking and living in New York, I really need to get on with this or we’ll be stuck in Greenville for a long time. Plus, from what I’ve read, many students think the online program is more intensive, because it forces you to interact with the class as opposed to just showing up.

If that works out I would be starting in January. I’m not exactly sure how long the program lasts, but I’m guessing longer than the SU year-long masters. In any case, I’m excited about the possibility.

In other news, we dropped our standard satellite package with DishNetwork and picked up one of their HD-only packages. It’s saving us about $5 a month and we’re only paying for channels we watch (and some friggin’ sweet ones I didn’t know existed – like Palladia… OH MY GOSH. So good.) and they’re better quality. I’m excited to watch LOST tomorrow night in High Definition. There are only two channels we miss that aren’t in HD yet, and those are IFC and BBC America. BBCA was supposed to release in HD last year, but didn’t. So BBCA, get your act together and give me Top Gear in HD, please.

And also exciting is that Jessica has been unpacking our kitchen! She said it was like Christmas morning yesterday and it made her want to write thank-you notes to people all over again. Most of the stuff we have has been packed away since we first moved out of Greenville about 6 months after the wedding. It’s nice to get all of it out and cleaned. We have awesome dishes that I had forgotten about.

So. That’s the wonderful world of me right now. We need a vacation sometime this year since we’re not moving. Anyone have a recommendation? We need not-too-expensive and preferably someplace with history. That or we could save up and go visit Harry in Yeovil, Somerset, UK. That would be fun. But not so “not-too-expensive”. We’ll see.

New Template Debut: Keep Calm

WordPress Template: Keep Calm

Brand spankin’ new in time for Easter to be ending. This is my new blog design for WordPress, my personal favourite platform to blog on.

It’s been about a year since I debuted a new design and I’ve felt long over due for a new style. I think this design (entitled Keep Calm) better represents my personality. And my Anglo-centrism (yeah, ask me about it).

I’m doing some tweaking to some aspects of it still since I developed it locally without my remote server setup and all its widgets and content. Widgets always cause problems :) And apparently so will Firefox. (It looks fantastic in Safari and other Webkit based browsers) In any case, it’s mostly solid and I kind of love the way it turned out.

Let me know what you think in the comments! Even if you’re not as ecstatic with it as I am, it’d be great to hear your thoughts.

This Life I Lead

Jess and I have decided to stay in Greenville for one more year. Not the plan we’ve been trying to have, but one that will probably work out better for us in the long run. In the meantime I’m looking for graduate programs in New Media Management or production to apply to for the 2010 Fall semester.

Here in Greenville I have a good, solid job that I won’t lose and Jessica has more opportunity to get a job here as well. So we can spend the next year saving and paying down school debt before making a move to one of the coasts.

Right now I’m looking at programs at Emerson, Syracuse U and the New School. But I haven’t done much research yet.

I’ve got a good amount of freelance work here and don’t see that letting up anytime soon. Plus we’ll have a year to enjoy our finally finished house (done this summer… or else!). Maybe we can finally unpack all of our things! We haven’t been able to do that since we were first married.

So. There it is. Midwest, you are home for a little longer.

Updating

Wow, lack of updates. I guess I’m busy.

First things first, I quit ScriptFrenzy already. I just have too much to do right now. And for me, I found a lot more motivation in writing a novel than I do in writing a script. Every time I sit down to script I think “I have websites and jobs I should be working on” and so I do those instead.

And the fruits of that misplaces labour is that whatisawix.com is almost finished. And I’ve got a good bead on the GFMC site. AND I possibly have a new client from here at the school. That’s exciting. He’s a super cool guy and, from what I hear, an excellent musician.

Last Saturday I judged the AgapeFest Battle of the Bands. It was kind of a long afternoon, but I’ve judged the thing the last three years and ran it before that. So I knew what I was getting into. It was a pretty good show with some great bands and some good bands and some so-so bands. But that’s what you get at a battle.

So, in a month it’ll be festival time and that will take up my life for about two weeks. I’ve got video to coordinate and a staff to look after and probably something else that’ll come up. Sadly no friends in bands coming out this year, but that’s okay.

I’m also planning some cool micro-blogging on www.agapefest.com the week of set up. I think I found a WP plugin that’ll work out and we’ll be able to twitter from @agapefest and have WordPress pull in the photos we send to TwitPic via our iPhones and such. Probably should take my Flip camera out too. Man. This might actually be fun!

ScriptFrenzy Time

Last November Jessica and I participated in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and each wrote our own 50k word novel in a month. It was absolutely crazy. And awesome. (If you want to read the trash I wrote, let me know in the comments)

Well, starting tomorrow ewe will be starting our own 100 page scripts for this year’s ScriptFrenzy event. I am half excited and half nervous to do ScriptFrenzy. I’ve never written nor attempted to write a script and am at a little bit of a loss at how this is going to work.

I’m planning to adapt this fantastic novel by Michael Cox called The Meaning of Night to the screen. I read this book in January and fell in love with the story. It’s so dark and mysterious and exciting. There is plenty of suspense, great characters, and witty dialogue. I think it would make a beautiful film.

So tomorrow we start. Sometime before LOST I guess. If you’re doing ScriptFrenzy, and you would like to, add me as a writing buddy.

If you’d like to read my script as we go along, let me know and I’ll see what I can do. I suppose it wouldn’t be a bad idea to do it like I did with NaNoWriMo. So, there’ll be a private post of the script. If you want to read it over the month, comment and let me know and I’ll create an account for you.
