Just bought tickets to Dublin. Now to figure out the train from Porto to Lisbon.
Also, if you haven’t used tripit.com you don’t know what you’re missing.

Sometimes I just get stressed out with life. But I’m okay. Finances suck sometimes. Not that I have problems; I just worry easily.
Adding to my summer listening list: Mike Dunn & the Kings of New England
Randall (actually Chad via Randall, I guess) recommended it, and it is FANTASTIC. I can’t tell you how stoked I was toward the end of my internship that the guys I looked up to at Militia loved Limbeck. When Chad passed on to me one of the Light Wires albums… oh man. So, Chad and Randall – thank you for the great music recommendations. Click that link up there and download it. The EP is less than $6 and totally worth that. This might be one of my favorite records for this summer (but it’s too early to tell yet).
I’ve been connecting with a lot of people I knew years ago on Facebook the last couple days. It’s been awesome. That’s one of the things I love about the social internet – being able to reconnect. That’s something that just wouldn’t happen without the tubes and interwebs.
Jess and I took some photos today that I’m pretty happy with. I’m looking for more gear to possibly take with us to Europe in July. Maybe a Kiev-4 or a Holga. I think I’m shying away from Holga because they’re common with the people I know. But we’ll see what happens.
Also, I’m reading a new book. Well, it’s kind of an old book, but it’s one my Britannia-centric friends (ahem, Randall) would enjoy. It’s called Outposts: Journey to the Surviving Relics of the British Empire and it’s a travel book… sort of. It’s a guy’s retelling of his attempt to visit every remaining outpost of Imperial Britain. I’m not too far in yet, but it’s already got me excited. I can’t wait to really get into it.
I’m also looking at some new Masters programs on the East coast. Stepping stones, if you will, to get to my final choice of MA/Ph.D. at William and Mary. Still working out the strategy in it all, but I think I’ve got it pretty airtight and will be brushing up for a GRE re-take and then applying to Syracuse University (possibly).
Restlessness kicks in about now. The campus is empty and I’m stuck doing web work. And not very creative web work at that. Hopefully my summer trips will keep me sane.

My friends Kris and Chase created the site manbabies.com – in the two months or so that it’s been online the site has been featured on VH1’s Best Day Ever website and Neatorama.com (as well as others).
Well, tonight I saw a tweet by Leo Laporte (TWiT.tv) linking to Revision3 and Martin Sargent’s show Internet Superstar. As I started to watch, I was surprised to hear Martin talking about how he was to have the creator of manbabies.com on his show. Sure enough, about three minutes in, there’s my friend Kris Truitt ON TV… sort of. It’s the internet, but it’s like TV. Basically.
Anyway, here it is:

I was going to wait till I had some definite numbers on this, but seeing as my work internet connection is ensuring that this will not be done by quitting time, we’ll post now.
So OS X 10.5.3 was release today after months of developer seeds. Jess and I arrived home with our tasty burgers and mistys from DQ to find Jon D proclaiming via Twitter that 10.5.3 was released. I ran upstairs and started the upgrade on my PowerBook G4. With our DSL connection it took ~12 minutes to download the package (given, it was 190 mb for the PB). As I was leaving home OS X was patching files. And that’s when I thought about it…
If I had gone to Apple Support and downloaded the entire package, put it on my USB thumb drive I wouldn’t have to download it at work.
Stupid me. I get to work and start the download. First off, it’s a 420 mb download for my Mac Pro at work. Secondly, it’s going to take 3 hours. It’s 2:15 as I write this sentence and the downloader is in the 66mb range and still reading 3 hours to download. In 3 hours I will be home enjoying my .5.3 install on trusty old Shiny (the name I bestowed on my PBG4 back in the day) and this stupid Mac Pro will be still downloading.
Okay, so *funny* part. We have three T1s at school, 95% of the students are home, and the rest of us are working… not downloading. And I still max out at 35kbps downloads normally. That’s ridiculous as I have a 3mbps downlink from AT&T DSL.
Anyway, here’s the comparison:
Home (DSL): 190mb = ~12 minutes = 15mb/min
Work (T1 x 3): 420mb = ~180 minutes = 2.3mb/min
